Maria “Marichi” Rosario C. Capino, MD, MSN, MPH, CPPS, has been the Performance Improvement Specialist at Hopkins ElderPlus for two years. In the mid-2000’s, she was Perioperative Safety Officer at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, where she reinvigorated the Perioperative Executive Leadership Safety Walk-Arounds by extending safety rounds to include patients and front-line staff. She introduced the use of human factors systems engineering as a basis for developing an investigative survey for clinical staff and implemented initiatives to investigate adverse outcomes and mitigate near-misses. She successfully adapted a theoretical framework that led to successes in implementing patient safety and quality improvement projects in her more recent roles as director of Patient Safety at the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Health during the COVID-19 pandemic and risk manager at Lifebridge.
